I’d also argue that even if we do have some metric to report against, it may not tell the whole story.

Employees are the most valuable assets an organization has and behind every successful nonprofit are passionate individuals who dedicate their time, skills, and energy. Volunteers and staff members are the driving force that brings the mission to life. I truly believe that the hardest part of making a nonprofit successful is making that first hire. Moving from 100% volunteer to paying a staff member is a HUGE step! However, I can speak from experience that it’s an important step. As dedicated as the Board Chair may be, you may be surprised at how much more dedicated and successful they can be as the ED!

8. Strategic Partnerships

Collaboration amplifies impact. As wonderful as your organization is, there are things you simply don’t do as well as others. Focus on your core competencies and partner with complimentary organizations. If you operate in a scarcity mindset, this is a scary idea because donations may flow to other organizations.

9. Continuous Learning and Improvement

Learning from successes and failures is integral to growth. Nonprofits that prioritize learning and adapt their strategies based on insights gained from experience tend to excel. This means having the guts to say when a program is not working!

10. Commitment to Transparency and Communication

Building trust to transparent communication with stakeholders, donors, and the public fosters credibility and long-term relationships.

The role of a nonprofit organization has always been to create social change and lead the way to a better world. And that in itself hasn’t changed. However, today’s environment is vastly different from that of just a decade or two ago. So, nonprofit leaders must adapt and change with the times if they hope to deliver their missions.
